Jonah is British filmmaker Kibwe Tavares second Sundance selected short. In 2011, Robots of Brixton, his sci-fi retelling of the 1981 Brixton Riots which Tavares made in his bedroom as an MA final project, won the Special Jury Award for Animation Direction. His latest Jonah, is a mixture of animation and live action. Through the memory of our older and wiser protagonist (Gambian-born British actor Louis Mahoney), the film centers on two bored young men (Daniel Kaluuya & Malachi Kirby) who discover the world’s largest fish on their sleepy shores. The subsequent effects transform their home from a small fishing village into a ‘seedy capitalist tourist trap’.
Jonah will screen as part of Sundance London 25-28 April. Watch the trailer, and click through for more on the African/African-themed shorts at Sundance 2013 here.
