Taibo Bacar | Autumn/Winter 2013
Right now, Taibo Bacar is undoubtedly the favourite son of Mozambique’s design world. The prodigiously talented young designer has has won a slew of awards: from Best Established Designer at Mozambique Fashion Week 2008, to Best Emerging Designer at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Africa 2012. And his approach to womenswear design continues to garner acclaim and turn heads.
He’s back with a bold and very wearable AW13 collection using print design “capulana” which the 26 year old calls “a uniquely Mozambican and African print.” Bacar is right to note that ”Mozambique is going through a phase of rapid development”: the country is expected to become the world’s biggest exporter of coal and has the 4th largest natural gas resource in the world. But he aims to add to the creative industries “I employ people here who send their kids to school, use health services and pay taxes. It’s about setting an example and being involved where you can.”
