“Michelle’s like Beyoncé in that song,” says the President. “‘Let me upgrade ya!’ She upgraded me.”
I am still chuckling from the above headline. Yes, this is false advertisement! (Barack did say that though!)
However…now that I have your full undivided attention…here is my weekly round up of BONAFIDE African fashion and Made in Africa in the news!
The powerful force that is: Michelle Obama and Beyonce (her fantasy person to be) both rocked again, I stress bonafide African designers and Made in Africa o!
Michelle Obama was spotted in Nigerian SS13 Maki Oh blouse (Made in Nigerian) and Ghana/LA based fashion house Osei Duro SS 13 Panel skirt,( Made in Ghana). Both of these fashion houses work hard in using local and dying(as in death) traditional dying (as in dye) and weaving traditions.
Beyonce opened up her US leg of the Mrs.Carter tour sporting Tanzanian ethical award winning and sustainable fashion brand Chichia London (Made in Tanzania) that also uses a traditional East African textile, the Khanga.
Those are swahili sayings on the shirt (note, not to be mistaken with Swaghili) ”Tunapendana wawili nyinyi yawahusu nini?” which translates to “We two, love each other, what concern is it of yours?” In true Bey fashion huh?
I love the synergies between these three design houses, they are the future of African fashion, eco-conscious, carrying forth indigenous knowledge whilst borrowing a few pages from modernity, yet still keeping everything funky fresh.
Now go ahead and UPGRADE Ya’self… Buy Made in Africa! #nobrainer #staybonafide
